Great Uncle Bulgaria

Commissioned by The Wombles, Sarah was honoured to create this unique sculpture of Great Uncle Bulgaria made from recycled materials.

As a child, Sarah loved the Wombles and their eco-friendly ethos of ‘making good use of the things that they find’, which has certainly inspired her throughout her career.  So she jumped at the chance to create one of the main characters from recycled materials.

The waste materials upcycled included, plastic carrier bags for the fur, corks for his walking stick, tin cans for his glasses and hundreds of crisp packets were lovingly upcycled into the tartan fabric. One of Sarah’s favourite features is the pocket watch, made from a jam jar lid, buttons and ring pulls.

The Great Uncle Bulgaria sculpture is a celebration of both the past and the future, a reminder of the importance of cherishing the things we love while committing to the protection of our planet.

Sarah’s sculpture was debuted at the ExCel and will now be toured and displayed at other Wombles exhibitions.
